Missed The Trend ?

above ... Swarovski Crystal Aurora Borealis Eternity Circle

There are times when I create something and think it is beautiful and will sell in a heartbeat, it is always a a rude awakening when I find obviously that no one else feels the same way.

I meticulously wove these Swarovski crystal Eternity Circle together and loved the depth and dimension of the piece in general.  When I took them out into the sunlight the sparkling effects were beyond amazing ... especially with the Crystal aurora borealis pendant.

above and below ... Sapphire Blue Swarovski Crystal pendant on handcrafted kumihimo braided cord.

However they seem to gather little attention and I don't understand why.  I think most of you beaders and jewelry makers are all aware of the price of Swarovski Crystals (these are 6 mm) so making a piece that uses over 80 crystals is not cheap.  I priced it about as low as I could but maybe I'm underpricing them and people expect these true Swarovskis to cost more ?  Or maybe they're passe, unhip and outdated ... though I thought circles, representing eternal love, was in ... I somehow missed when they went out.

Have any of you jewelry maker - beaders created pieces that you thought would go like hot-fresh baked bread and instead sat around your inventory like old, stale biscuits ?

  1. I think that pendant is beautiful! I love circles and I don't think they ever go out of style.

I have created many pieces that I love, and thought everyone would want but never sell. It's hard to know what everyone wants, that's why I make what I like so if id does not sell I can keep it for myself.

I think the price is good, maybe even a little low considering all the work you put into creating it. I am going to put it on my Pinterest board, hopefully your get a few views.

I have created many items that I thought were going to be hot seller, and they just sit in my Etsy shop. I try to make things i like so if they don't sell I can keep them for myself.

I am going to add your necklace to my Pinterest board, hopefully it will bring in a few views.

  3. Thank you Additionsstyle. :)

You are so right about making what we like as it would probably not be much fun to create pieces that we either do not like or that does not suit us.

  4. I think it's beautiful! I love the simplicity and elegance of it. I think the price seems very reasonable for how much work went in to it.

Sometimes I find that what we think is going to sell the fastest in our shops, often is the thing that sits the longest.

The crystal one if it was on a lighter strand would be beautiful as a wedding necklace!!

  5. Anna, I think they are really pretty :)

It is hard to know what to create, I definitely just stick to what V. said above and just take photos, create artwork and sew and knit things that I like and if they sell great if not it isn't something I hate or compromised myself making.

But when you have done so much work and you don't sell, it gets pretty frustrating. I guess there are always trends but trying to keep up with them would wear me out (He! He!)

    Happy Halloween :) T.

  6. Swarovski has such a beautiful things. When my father use to travel he would on airport buy Swarovski figurines for my mother which she over the year collected and showcases them in a glass box.,which has light and if the sun or light is on them they shine in so many colours:)

  7. Meeling that is a great idea for the crystal pendant. On a silver or pearl necklace it would make for a lovely bridal accessory.

  10. I am not a jewelry maker so I can't answer about the price. I will say that it looks like an absolutely magnificent necklace though. It is a statement piece for certain.

  12. The thing with trends is they have to happen before the trend even begins and then just as the trend is trending its time to find something else to be the next big thing. Mind bending! Exhausing to say the least. That's why you should just make what you're inspired to make and show it off...like these beautiful pieces! I love circles personally and would wear either of these in a nano second. You are talented beyond belief my friend!

  13. The necklace is beautiful- sparkly and easy to wear.

I think we have all had the experience of making something that we think will sell well and watched it sit; as well as the opposite, something that was less than expected that just flew off the display.

Price is part of it, but I expect the expensive pieces to take longer to sell.

One last thought- I love crystals but my Mom regularly points out to me that crystals are evening wear. I disagree, but there are many customers who agree. This might explain part of the slow sales.

  15. That is a stunning necklace! I made myself crazy trying to figure out what people would like well enough to buy. Now I make things I like and if it sells that's great. You are so creative...hang in there! :)

  16. Honestly I have made quite a few things I thought would sell and they don't . I think everything sells better in person - no way around the visual excitment, touching, trying on etc - there's no way around it! These are lovely!

  17. Sometimes it just takes time for the right person to come along and love a design!
